Ethereum Steadies Around $2,380 as Traders Look to May 2026 "Glamsterdam" Upgrade
Ethereum is hovering near $2,380 as markets position for the May 2026 "Glamsterdam" hard fork, billed as the network's biggest execution-layer redesign since The Merge. Sentiment has been supported by rising long-term holdings, record staking levels, and the strongest spot ETF inflows seen so far in 2026.
Positioning has tightened around key upside markers, including Citi's $3,175 target and Standard Chartered's $7,500 year-end projection. Accumulation wallets increased from 20.1 million ETH in January to 26.55 million ETH in April, a gain of about 6.5 million ETH over 15 weeks, keeping the setup skewed toward ETH versus Solana this quarter.
Glamsterdam is expected to introduce Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation, on-chain block building, and Block Access Lists, with the upgrade roadmap targeting roughly 10,000 transactions per second and materially lower gas costs. Vitalik Buterin's February EIP package also lifts the per-block gas limit from 60 million to 200 million, pushing Ethereum toward multicore execution. A follow-on upgrade, Hegota, is scheduled for later in 2026 to add further performance gains.
Analysts point to familiar pre-upgrade behavior: ETH has often advanced 20% to 40% in the weeks ahead of major network milestones. Tom Lee of Fundstrat has described ETH as undervalued near $3,000, echoing Citi's base-case framing and reinforcing the bullish narrative.
On-chain and institutional signals have added support. Total staked ETH reached 37.85 million, and the Ethereum Foundation added 45,000 ETH on April 5, a move viewed as reinforcing yield-focused positioning. Bitmine's reported 4.8 million ETH position highlights institutional conviction, while spot ETFs posted their strongest weekly inflows of 2026.
Ether is trading near $2,320 with a market capitalization of about $287 billion. Solana is near $89 with a roughly $47 billion market cap.
Glamsterdam provides Ethereum a clear catalyst in Q2 2026 that Solana lacks, and any meaningful scaling improvement would directly pressure Solana's core value proposition. Key risks include potential delays that push Glamsterdam later into 2026, along with macro headwinds tied to the FOMC meeting and geopolitical tensions. Even so, Ethereum enters its catalyst window with rising accumulation, elevated staking, and clearly defined analyst targets.
