Bitcoin Whales Move $200M to Exchanges; $903M Accumulation Detected
Bitcoin whale flows are sending mixed signals. Two whales moved $200 million of BTC onto exchanges in the past 24 hours, a possible sign of rising selling pressure. The broader backdrop is volatile: a Federal Reserve rate decision, major tech earnings, $12 billion in Bitcoin options expiring Friday, and the US midterm elections are all in view, said CoinRoutes CEO Ian Weisberger.
Weisberger said investors are focused on risk-adjusted returns and view BTC as too risky for its return profile. Some altcoins, including Hyperliquid and ZEC, have performed well in recent months. Hyperliquid also stands to gain from RWA volume tied to the AI boom.
Glassnode data show a shift in whale positioning. Hyperliquid whales now hold a net short in Bitcoin for the first time since March. They were long at the bottom and reversed last week. With bearish sentiment, macro uncertainty and BTC consolidation, the positioning looks strategic and raises the risk of a liquidity trap before the next major move.
Whale shorts are running against supply-squeeze signals. Whale selling is accelerating before key macro events, and BTC is consolidating near $80,000, leaving downside risks. Supply-squeeze signals suggest underlying demand is absorbing sell-side pressure. A recent break above $81,000 added to bullish sentiment.
Bitcoin just recorded its largest outflow in five weeks. Santiment tracked 14,942 BTC leaving exchanges today, ahead of the Fed decision on Wednesday and GDP and PCE data on Thursday. In the same window, one whale bought 11,326 BTC worth $903 million.
Institutional inflows, exchange outflows, whale accumulation and firm price action point to demand absorbing supply. Bitcoin may be positioned to absorb volatility around key macro events and build momentum for a potential post-election rally. A large whale trap could be forming and could help trigger a break above $80,000.
Bottom line: Bitcoin whales are sending mixed signals, with some selling and others accumulating. Heavy exchange outflows could tighten supply and support a BTC breakout above $80,000.
